WAKING THOUGHTS
A play in English by Jonathan Weightman
FORBIDDEN LOVE IN POST-EARTHQUAKE PORTUGAL TOWERS RISE AND FALL IN ENGLAND
1787. Lisbon. Two men from different worlds meet and fall in love.
Willam Beckford and Gregório Franchi
We see them at work and at play in Portugal and later in England while Beckford’s great Gothic
masterpiece, Fonthill Abbey, rises and falls.
The play follows their relationship from their meeting on the steps of the Church of São Vicente - Franchi a young musician at Lisbon’s Patriarchal church, Beckford a rich young Englishman on his Grand Tour - to their later lives, taking in the gay bordellos of London and the drab respectability of Bath.
They remained connected for the rest of their lives.
The play tells the story of this long relationship.
